Derrick's Crosman Adapter for AR Muzzlebrakes

So, I'd bought a couple AR-15 muzzle brakes with the idea of adapting them to fit various air rifles in the pile. AR muzzles are threaded 1/2"-28. I procured a thread cutting die and thought I was in the AR brake business, so to speak. My original intent was (and still is) to thread the airgun barrels and screw the brakes directly to the guns. Then, as always, I got sidetracked--this time by my ever evolving Crosman/CAR 2250 project. One slight hitch, Crosman 22XX barrels are only 7/16" diameter OD-- 1/16"smaller than the threads in the brake. A simple adapter was in order.

I found a perfect piece of aluminum rod in my metal supply box. It was 0.910" OD, already had a 1/4" hole drilled through and an external taper cut on one end.

I chucked it in the 3-jaw and used the tailstock to drill it to 7/16" to fit over the Crosman barrel. I didn't drill it completely though. Just a bit more than 1" deep. Drilling it completely through for the 7/16" barrel would have left less than 1/32" of metal to hold the brake threads. Too thin. I want the barrel to bottom in the adapter, then have about .375" of aluminum with just the .250" hole for the pellet to clear, THEN the threads for the brake. It's that critical .375" section that acts as the supporting structure for the brake.

I then faced the end and started turning down to match the 0.875" OD of the muzzle brake.

A quick test fit with a spare Crosman barrel looks like a go.

Got the OD to within a couple thousandths. No measurement taken. Used a comparison caliper on the muzzle brake and got it to match. Then, flipped the adapter around in the 3-jaw. This is the muzzle end that will get the 1/2" threads for the brake. It gets taken down to a couple thou under 0.500".

Shaving away. Going to cut the 1/2"-28 threads about 3/4" in length. When I was at size, I put a very slight taper on the end to act as a starting guide for the threading die.

One of the Taig accessories is a die holder that mounts to the tailstock. This lets you rather easily cut threads concentric to the centerline of the part in the jaws of the chuck.

Another view. Using a 1" diam. thread cutting die. Typically, round, adjustable dies are used to cut new threads while hex shaped dies are for chasing (cleaning, realigning) existing threads. The die holder is turned by hand with a short tommy bar in the side holes as the headstock is held fast by hand. Lathe power is not switched on.

I then used a small cutter to relieve the last 2 threads so the brake could seat flush. A parting tool is also good for this operation.

Flipped again. Gingerly held by the newly cut threads, I buffed the jaw marks off the adapter.

A quick trip to the drill press. Used the ruler trick to find the center of the curve and drilled though.

I'd better clean this up. Gotta love the way aluminum cuts on the lathe!

The final step. Tapping threads for the setscrew that will hold the adapter to the Crosman barrel. I used an M4 x 0.7mm tap and lots of Rapid Tap cutting oil.

Last look. The muzzle slides inside to about the center of my thumbnail.

Slide on till the barrel bottoms. Snug down the M4 setscrew with a 2mm allen wrench.

Thread on the AR muzzle brake.

There's probably a few blogs in here...

Try as I might, I couldn't help but feel a bit like James Bond when I threaded the brake onto the gun.

Nick wondered how much clearance I had between the adapter and the sunshade. About that much, Nick. About that much. Total luck. Sharp eyed (and long-time) readers will perhaps notice the Carter barrel band.

Derrick's 22XX Steel Breech Install & Barrel Change

I wanted to post some basic info on the Crosman CO2 guns. I know we get some new shooters who are often unfamiliar with our lingo. We often say 22XX or 17XX to denote calibers of Crosman 2240, 2250 and 2260 CO2 guns. The 22 or 17 refer to the caliber--so it's possible to even have a 20XX or a 25XX... The "XX" means the information still applies regardless of whether you have a pistol (the 40) carbine (50) or the rifle (60). Technically, there are also the Crosman Custom Shop guns--like the 2300--so this can get confusing as to just what the heck we're talking about if you're not a dyed-in-the-wool Crosman freak.

Crosman built their line of 2240, 1740, 2250, 1750, 1760 and 2260 as a modular system. (ED: as is the 1377 pneumatic pistol) Most all of the parts can be swapped back and forth quite easily between guns to get the features desired. For instance, it's possible to convert a 2240 basic pistol into a short carbine with the addition of the shoulder stock from the 2250. You can also convert to 0.177" cal with just a new barrel and bolt.

The most common upgrades to the guns are the steel breech addition as well as a trigger job. I wanted to document both so we had a reference. The steel breech upgrade adds both a dovetail mount for a scope, as well as vastly increased barrel support. The procedure for its installation is also the same if you want to change to a different caliber.

Remember, all the procedures are essentially the same. I built this gun up from parts so I may use an allen wrench where you may need a flat head. My barrel won't be the same length as your barrel... You'll get the gist.
Obviously, unload the gun. Remove the Co2 from the gun, too--just in case. By the way, all the threads are Imperial. No metric spoken here today.

Loosen the setscrews top and bottom on the barrel band.

Slide it off the lower gas tube.

Pull the bolt back and expose the head of the nefarious 4-48 screw.

Using a 0.05" allen wrench remove the little bolt.

Remove the rear breech bolt (it's an 8-32) that threads into the rear cap on the gas tube.

Voila. The breech falls right off. Take note of the small cylindrical rubber ring. This is the transfer port o-ring.

The small steel silver cylinder is the transfer port. The long end fits into the bottom of the barrel where it brings in the CO2 behind the pellet. The short end fits flush against the top of the CO2 valve surrounded by the o-ring.

Here's a Crosman steel breech assembly. The barrel slides into the front where it's held by a setscrew.

Said setscrew. Loosen it a few turns out before installing the barrel.

When you install the barrel into the breech, make sure to align the transfer port holes. This is maybe where I mention that both the Crosman .177 and the .22 cal barrels have an OD of 7/16", so the breech is exactly the same for either caliber, it's the bolt that comes with the breech that will be different.

I put the transfer port o-ring into the hole on the gas tube. Set it right on top of the brass CO2 valve assembly.

Transfer port goes on next.

Separate the handle from the bolt if they're assembled. Install the bolt into the channel in the breech. Thread the bolt handle back in. The bolt needs to be the correct one correct for the given barrel's caliber. A bolt for a .22 cal barrel will not seal properly on the .177 barrel.

The pin sticking up at the rear is attached to the hammer. It must be behind the rear of the bolt to function correctly.

Line it all up and reinstall that 4-48 bolt. Gently snug it.

Place the breech cap into place (this silver one isn't stock. I turned this one a week or two ago on the lathe) and thread the 8-32 rear breech bolt home.

Check that 4-48 bolt inside the breech again and make sure it's still snug. Reinstall the barrel band and snug its top and bottom setscrews.

Another view. It occurred to me that this info is also applicable to the Crosman Discovery as that PCP rifle utilizes much of the model 2260-- including the steel breech upgrade kit. If you fancy changing calibers, just follow the above steps and sub in the new barrel and correct bolt.

No barrel band on this one. If the barrel isn't overly long or heavy (shrouded?), you can get by without the band. The barrel now is supported by both the ID of the breech as well as the setscrew. You cannot do this on the stock plastic breach because there's insufficient bearing surface between the barrel and the breech as well as no setscrew support.
Oh, and now the gun has .22 dovetails. Optics here we come.

Resealing a Crosman 2100, Part 2

On I go.

The transfer port seal was a bit rough.

So it needed to be replaced. I had one on hand.

I punched out the pump pivot roll pin.

The plug and pin.

The piston assembly. It's basically a 760/1377 piston with an extension.

I pushed the valve out with a dowel.

The valve.

Unscrewed.

The inlet and exhaust valves were good but the o-rings needed to be replaced.

So I replaced them and screwed it back together.

I replaced the pump cup as well. See how the extension snaps into the piston where normally the seal snaps in.

I reinserted the valve and lined up the transfer port.

You need three hands and a helper monkey to get it all back together.

Notice the position of the cocking lever, and you have to have the BB follower pointing upwards to align with the slot it travels in. Then you sort of massage the whole thing back together. It take a couple of tries to get all the pins and such back in the holes. I'd love the see how Crosman assembles the things. I tested it and at 10 pumps I was getting 680 fps with Crosman Premier Lights (7.9gr.).
