Haenel 303-Super Tear Down Part 3

Still operating on the assumption that the transfer port is too large in diameter. The easiest solution is to sleeve the port down to a smaller size. 1/8" was the size Cardew favored from his research and I'm in no position to argue.

Some brass tubing from the scrap box. The ID of the tube is 0.125".

Test fit. The port is drilled at an angle. I'll assume that the angle at the breech face is identical to the angle of the inside face of the compression tube. I filed the brass tube to match the outside angle, turned it around and turned it over. An index line scribed on the tube made this easier than it sounds.

Because this can't be quick and easy, the tube is too loose in the transfer port bore. Knurling the tube will expand the OD a few thou.

It'll also give the epoxy something to grab.

Was pretty liberal with the JB Weld. If it doesn't work, the brass will easily drill out and Cardew and I will have something to talk about.

A 3/4"rod held vertically in the vise acts as a stop inside the compression tube for the blind end of the brass tube.

Cleaned up the excess JB Weld from the breech face before it hardened.

Cut the tube off flush with a jeweler's saw.

Finished the breech end.

Back to that too short spring guide. Found some likely replacements in the scrap box by test fitting them to the ID of the mainspring. A piece of o.500" cold rolled tubing and a spare Weihrauch spring guide made the final cut, but the HW won by virtue of a better fit to the spring. For what it's worth, the HW guide is 0.514" in OD.

Punched out the stock sheet metal tube. This was easier said than done. I expected it to pop right out, but no, Haenel had reduced the diameter of the tube, inserted it from the front, then rolled that rear flange. Tip of the hat to them for permanence, but I'm scratching my head that they put so much effort into fastening what's no more than a piece of too short, too small diameter, sheet metal. Uh, way to go guys?

Cut the tabs off the HW spring guide then through drilled it so the Haenel piston rod would clear.

Of course, the OD of the HW tube is too big to fit into the bore of the plug. Reducing the plug end of the HW tube will leave the wall thickness on the thin side.

So rather than thin the tube, I drilled the plug out to 0.500".

Then used a boring bar to open the hole to 0.512".

Set everything in the vise jaws and heated the plug with a torch. Used the vise to press the tube into the bore while it was hot.

Took a substantial amount of force to seat the new tube. Given how hard it was to remove that original guide, this one is even tighter. I think the guys at Haenel would approve.

I was getting ready to reassemble the rifle when I remembered that metal cap--or button whatever you want to call it--that keeps tension on the cocking lever. It was all scarred up.

Just a thin stamping. Almost looks like a bottle cap.

More scrounging in the metal box gave up a piece of tool steel--most likely W-1.

Turned an end down to 0.640" OD.

Then hogged out the end until the coil spring fit inside. Cleaned up the interior with a boring bar...

and parted it off.

Sanded the top flat on a granite surface plate.

Took it to 400 grit. I'll harden, then polish it so it doesn't wear out like the original.

I'll be back with more in a few days.

Haenel 310 Disassembly, Part 1

I recently bought a Haenel 310-2 and Haenel 311 from a gentleman who answered one of my "WTB Beaters" posts on the yellow forum. The 310 had low power and is missing the front sight hood and rear sight elevator. There's some good info about the 310 up on Tom Gaylord's blog (part 1&2, part 3&4), as well as this Russian forum post, And muzzle.de although it's about the 310-4...
The 310 shoots 4.4mm round ball. I'll talk more about that later but I wonder if anyone knows of a source for precision round lead balls in 4.4mm (called "punktkugeln") from Germany? I found a few websites but am hesitant to order online in a foreign language...JG Airguns does have shot but I fear it's the same shot as the other US sourced shot I have which is not round (if it is truly round, let me know!). JG Airguns also has used Haenel 310s for $99.99 which is a pretty good deal if they're in ok shape.

The 310-2 held by my hard working imp.

The front sight is missing the hood. ("korntunnel")

And the rear missing the elevator.

Modell 3.102? Or 3102 or 310-2...nomenclature is confusing.

The 12 round magazine.

The magazine well.

Inserted into the rifle.

Low power...although Tom Gaylord had similar velocities...

One screw removed...

And the middle screw...

And the front trigger screw.

Shorter screw is the front screw.

The action.

The magazine well.

I pried off the cover.

The pin for the bolt pushes out. I straightened the bolt and pulled it free.

Pin holds the end cap.

The somewhat complex safety knob end...

I pulled out the trigger group. The piece of sheetmetal also pulls off. I believe it is a cutoff to keep the gun safe when cocking.

The parts removed so far. I have no great incentive to disassemble the trigger group.
More to come...

An Accessory Rail for the Haenel 303-Super Part 1

One of the final things I wanted to undertake with the Haenel 303-Super was inletting and adding an accessory rail under the forend. An accessory rail is basically a T-track and it's handy for attaching slings, hand stops, palm rests, bipods and what-not as shooting aides. Yep, should've considered this when refinishing the stock. But it's not like I have a plan here.

Anyway, I bought a piece of Euro-sized accessory rail from Champion Shooters Supply a while back but was reluctant to do the install. Figured I'd screw up a virtually irreplaceable vintage stock. The slot wouldn't be straight, the edge would tear out, the slot wouldn't be parallel... Or most likely, all of the aforementioned would occur simultaneously. Valid concerns that gave me great pause. Other considerations included what to use to actually cut the slot, as well as how to do the least amount of finish damage to the gun stock. The good news was the Haenel's blocky profile and deep forend provided generous wood depth to work with. The blocky shape proved to be key. Both the sides and top of the stock have zero taper--so those edges could be used as a cutting guide.

Opted to use the drill press instead of a router for some sick reason Made a simple fence to bolt to the drill press table. The cherry base and white oak for the fence were chosen because they were on hand and dead flat. I screwed them together taking care the edges met at 90-degree angles. Two counter bored holes for through bolts lined up with the drill press table slots for positioning.

OK, the plan: The stock will be pressed down against the bed and back against the fence slightly as it's fed into the cutter. Moving the fence on the table lines up the bit to cut a parallel slot. I'll make slightly overlapping parallel slots until I have one large slot of the correct length, width, and depth for the rail. Piece of cake. Hmmmm. Did I mention that the stock is vintage and probably irreplaceable?

Gave the fence a heavy coat of paste wax to hopefully protect the stock from scratches. Found some scrap black walnut and made multiple test slots. Then made some more. It'll take multiple passes to get the width correct. Called it a night and slept on it.

A couple days later, I screwed up my courage, pulled the action from the stock and dusted off the rail.

Traced the rail onto the stock as guidelines. Set the depth. Waxed the fence again.

Switched from a 1/2" router bit to a smaller 1/4" as it worked marginally better during the test cuts. Double checked everything. Pondered, then flipped the switch.

Ran the bit at the highest speed and took my sweet time. Slowly make a pass, stop, readjust the fence to widen the slot slightly, cut, readjust...

Took a while to get the width dead on--and centered.

Dust blown out.

Deep breath for the test fit. The rail went in nice and snug. Not a hint of a gap at any point along the sides. Happily, the stock finish also fared well with zero damage to the sides. A couple small marks on top to repair, but nothing difficult.

Filed the back edge of the rail to fit the rear of the slot.

Cut the front to length and fit with a file. Sort of a half round radius on the front. Want to stain the slot ebony to protect and match the surrounding wood and those two very small scrapes to fix on the top of the stock need some Tru-Oil.

Just need to attach the rail then find some cool accessories.

I'll finish this in a couple days.
